I had gone home that night in a kind of shock. I did not tell Tish right away. I thought about it for three days. I went back to the office. I looked at Hunter. I watched him laugh with a client. I watched him take a call from Meredith on speaker in his office, telling her he loved her, telling her he could not wait for their life together. I sat at my desk and I decided I had to know more. I did something that I am not fully proud of — I pulled public records. Marriage licenses are public. Divorce decrees are

public. I spent, over the course of a weekend, about forty dollars on online record searches and three hours of my own time. What I found was this: Hunter had been married three times. Three marriages were documented on three different dates, in three different states, between 2016 and 2022. I could confirm two divorces. The third marriage — the most recent, in Nevada, to a woman named Roxanne Wexler — had, as far as the public record I could access showed, never been dissolved. Hunter was, on paper, still married.
